How to Pick the Right Running Shoe for You
— 3 min read —
Whether you’re lacing up for your first 5K or you're a seasoned runner pounding the pavement each week, one of the most important decisions you can make is choosing the right running shoe. The perfect pair isn’t just about style - it’s about support, comfort, and helping you stay injury-free. If you’ve ever wondered how to tell if your running shoes are truly working for you, we’ve got three simple tests you can try right at home to help you find that just-right fit (yes, we're channelling our inner Goldilocks!).
The Dishrag Test
Hold the toe of the shoe in one hand and the heel in the other and twist each end in the opposite direction like a dishrag. Ideally, you want the shoe to be able to move without being too rigid.
The Fold Test
Fold the toe of the shoe upwards towards the tongue. The toe of the shoe should be able to fold up vertically without touching the tongue. The key here is to make sure the shoe is not too rigid and not too flexible.
The Shelf Test
Put your shoes on a flat surface, like a shelf, and check to see if the sole of the shoe is still right under the rest of the shoe. If the shoe is leaning away from the sole then it is time to toss that shoe away!
Your running shoes are your foundation - so making sure they offer the right balance of flexibility and support can make all the difference in how you feel during and after your run. These quick at-home tests are an easy way to assess whether your shoes are still up to the task or if it’s time for an upgrade.
