Everything You’ve Ever Wondered About Acupuncture (But Were Too Nervous to Ask)
— 2 min read —
Thinking about trying acupuncture but unsure what to expect?
You're not alone — and no, you’re not the only one wondering about the needles. Whether you’re curious, skeptical, or mildly needle-avoidant, this post is here to walk you through it — no secrets.
Matthew, our kind and experienced acupuncturist (and low-key the calmest human you’ll ever meet), answers all of your burning questions and helps you feel totally at ease.
So... what exactly is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a key part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been used for thousands of years (yep, millennia).
Tiny, hair-thin needles are inserted at specific points to support your body’s natural healing processes — kind of like nudging your system back into balance.
At wellbe, we use acupuncture to support a wide range of concerns: stress, sleep, digestion, hormones, fertility, immunity, chronic pain, and more.
Does it hurt? (Asking for a friend.)
Honestly? Not really.
The needles are super thin — more like soft filaments than anything else. Most people barely feel them go in. You might feel a bit of warmth, heaviness, or tingling (we call it the “Qi” effect), but most patients find the treatment relaxing — some even nap. Yes, you read that right. Acupuncture naps are FOR REAL.
What conditions does it help with?
According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture may support over 200 health conditions. Some of the most common reasons people come to see Matthew include:
Stress and anxiety
Insomnia or sleep disruptions
Hormonal imbalance (including perimenopause and PMS)
Digestive concerns
Fertility and pregnancy support
Pain (neck, back, joints, headaches, etc.)
Allergies and immune health
Have something else going on? Bring it up — acupuncture is personalized, and your plan will be too.
Is it safe? (And are those needles reused?!)
Your safety is our top priority.
At wellbe, we only use single-use, sterile, Health Canada-approved needles. They’re opened in front of you and go straight into a medical waste container after treatment.
Matthew is also registered with the CTCMPAO (that’s the regulatory body for acupuncture in Ontario), and he’s had extensive training to ensure your care is safe, personalized, and evidence-informed.
Wait, what about the herbs?
Alongside acupuncture, Matthew offers customized Chinese herbal formulas — think plant-based support designed just for you. Herbs can be especially helpful for internal conditions like hormone balance, digestion, or stress-related symptoms.
It’s totally optional — and you’ll always have a chance to chat through it first.
What happens at the first appointment?
Your first visit is 60 minutes and includes:
A full intake (we want to know your whole story, not just your symptoms)
A personalized treatment plan
Your first acupuncture treatment (if you’re ready!)
Optional herbal recommendations
Follow-up visits are 45 minutes and keep building on the progress.
What should I do before my appointment?
Eat a light meal (please don’t come hangry).
Wear loose-fitting clothes — we’ll likely need access to your arms and legs.
Bring your list of medications or supplements.
Skip the perfume or heavy scents — we share our healing space with others.
Is it covered by insurance?
Most extended health plans do cover acupuncture — but check with your provider to be sure. Unfortunately, Chinese herbal medicine is usually not covered at this time.
Acupuncture is a gentle, effective way to support your body’s healing — whether you’re in a season of stress, transition, or simply need a recharge. You don’t need to know exactly what’s wrong to get started. You just need to show up.
Ready to try it?
Matthew is accepting new patients and would love to support you on your health journey.
